| Overview |
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) have become key technology tools for the collection, storage and analysis of spatially referenced data. Industries utilising these spatial technologies include agriculture, forestry, mining, market research, environmental analysis as well as the social and medical sciences.
Post Graduate Certificate in GIS and RS course will allow students to build their knowledge and practical expertise in GIS and RS technology and applications.
The structure provides considerable flexibility allowing students to quickly gain the GIS and RS knowledge and qualification they need today, and to add to their credentials at a later date if necessary. Students develop a capacity for independent research, problem analysis and solution.
Students will develop their knowledge and understanding through formal coursework. Their research, analytical and problem-solving skills will be developed through analysis and the completion of a literature review.

| Minimum qualification required to attend this |
| Science graduates, post graduates from M. Sc with geography, geology, agriculture, forestry, Engineers from all streams |
| Topics Covered |
| STL01.1 Principles of GIS |
This subject introduces students to, and provides a foundation in the use of geographic information systems (GIS). Students develop the basic theoretical, technical and analytical skills necessary to apply GIS to simple spatial problems. The subject contains a significant element of practical work in which students are encouraged to directly apply their theoretical knowledge. Attention is focussed on the operations of GIS and the application of GIS to simple spatial analysis. This subject forms a basis for further study in other modules |
| STL01.2 Image Analysis |
|
The subject covers the theoretical background of remote sensing; treats in detail the acquisition of digital data by imaging/non-imaging systems; and examines the commonly used procedures for enhancing and classifying multi-spectral data. |
| STL01.3 GIS Applications |
This subject extends the study of GIS. It develops advanced skills in the complex modelling of spatial data.
Subject modules include:
- SQL based spatial query
- Selected advanced analysis
- Raster analysis
The subject extends the students theoretical and analytical capabilities. The practical component forms an integral part in developing the necessary skills in GIS modelling. |
| STL01.4 Cartography and Data Visualisation |
|
This subject introduces the student to the techniques for the presentation of spatial, numerical and table-based data in order to maximise their effectiveness and simplify their interpretation. Students will learn, geocoding, design visualisations of information, taking into account the problems of human perception, variations in audience type, and the media or presentation environment selected. |
| STL01.5 Integrated Remote Sensing and GIS |
This subject focuses on the integration of geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing technologies. The students will have exposure to different methods of land use classification, preparation of GIS thematic maps, perform change detection analysis. |
STL01.6 Algorithms in GIS Modelling |
|
Provides an introduction to and overview of the application of statistical techniques in spatial data analysis. The fundamental approach used will be to highlight the practical value of using modern techniques instead of previous compromises. |
| STL01.7 Remote Sensing Algorithms |
This subject aims to give students an understanding of the important mathematical concepts and algorithms commonly used in processing, multispectral satellite imagery.
|
| Goals |
|
Those completing this course will be able to apply for positions in any reputed / MNC GIS/ Remote Sensing company. They will be given exposure to all latest GIS\RS technology during their course period which will help them to achieve their career goal |

Post Graduate Certificate in GIS based programming
| Course Details |
|
Course Code: |
STL02 |
| Course Name: |
Post Graduate Certificate in GIS based programming |
| Course Duration: |
4 months (150 hours) + 2 months project |
| Training Center: |
Kolkata/Hyderabad |
| Classes: |
3 days a week 2 hours per day |
|
| Minimum qualification required to attend this |
The course has been designed for Software professional who want to develop on ESRI desktop based software and GIS fresher /executives who want to upgrade themselves as ESRI developer |
| Topics Covered |
| ArcObject programming |
This course teaches the fundamentals of VBA application development (Visual Basic for Applications), OOP concepts (Object-Oriented Programming), .NET platform and the specifics of working with ArcObjects
OOP concepts are described, including the advantages of the Component Object Model (COM). All ArcObjects classes are COM-based. Interface programming is covered in detail. It is at the core of programming with the ArcObjects library, yet it may be new even to seasoned programmers such as Avenue programmers
ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo share the same architecture, and the knowledge gained in this course applies to all three.
Class time is mostly spent doing hands-on programming exercises, where students write code that exposes them to many ArcGIS programming tasks as well as to the most commonly used ArcObjects classes. On the last afternoon of the course, participants will have time to work on more advanced programming exercises or to explore ArcObjects on their own. Upon finishing the course, students will have plenty of sample code from which they can build their own applications.

| Location Solutions with google maps API |
|
This course is designed to enable the student to take advantage of Google Maps for your website. Students will learn how to create maps, add map controls for user interactions (zooming, and panning), programmatically alter the map extent, add points of interest to the map, add custom icons, geocode addresses on the fly, read addresses from a database or XML file, and display aerial photography. |
| Location Solutions with Microsoft Virtual Earth |
Many applications can benefit from location capabilities, such as public safety locators, data analysis/business intelligence, and fleet solutions. This class provides a comprehensive introduction to the Microsoft Virtual Earth platform, including a look at the SOAP and JavaScript APIs that provide |
At the end of the course participants will be able to: |
|
- Gain knowledge and understanding of the technology, terminology, extent, potential and capacity of GIS as means of modeling the world
- An appreciation of the relationship between GIS and other chosen subjects
- An ability to apply GIS to practical solutions of problems
- A range of transferable skills such as self-management, communication, problem solving, learning and research
